Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can improve the shape and position of the ear. Otoplasty can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury. Ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face.
The way ears affect your appearance is determined primarily by the way they harmonize your face and head. Most people prefer ears that lie close to the head and extend from the level of the brow to the base of the nose.
Children who are good candidates for ear surgery are healthy and generally 5 years of age or older (when a child’s ear cartilage is stable enough for correction), cooperative and able to communicate their feelings. Teenagers and adults who are good candidates for ear surgery are healthy, non-smoking individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for ear surgery.
The surgery will be done under general anesthesia. Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.
An overnight stay in the hospital will be required. The sutures will need to be taken care of during the healing phase. Dr. Shetty will give you specific instructions on how to take care of the operative site and yourself.
