Pimples or acne vulgaris as it is known in medical terms, is such a common occurrence but there is so much wrong information and myths surrounding the topic.
Education about it can help prevent complications like stubborn pigmentation, and scarring. I have mentioned a few misconceptions about acne, let me explain them:
1. You don’t need moisturizer if your skin is oily?
This I think is the most common one!
It’s a common notion that acne-prone skin which is usually oily, doesn’t need any moisturizer. It needs moisturizer as much as other skin types do. More so because all the topical acne treatments can cause dryness and irritation which is why restoring the moisture back into the skin is very important.
2. You get acne because your face is dirty?
Having acne doesn’t mean your skin is “dirty”. It doesn’t mean you need to wash your face often. Acne Vulgaris is an inflammatory condition that has multiple causes like genetic, hormonal, dietary and stress. It is by no means a condition of poor hygiene.
3. You can treat acne with a spot treatment?
As acne is not just skin deep, just applying products on the pimples is not going to suffice and neither is it going to prevent new lesions. Also, if acne isn’t treated properly and promptly, it can cause scarring which can be difficult to treat.
4. Scrubbing your face is a great way to get rid of acne?
Scrubbing your face because you have acne is the worst thing you can do! Scrubbing can disrupt the skin barrier, alter the pH of the skin, and invite infections. It can also leave micro tears in the skin again, making it more prone to infections. You can say goodbye to physical scrubbing if you have acne.
